But before there was Eric B/Rakim, DJ Jazzy Jeff/Fresh Prince, Pete Rock/CL Smooth, Scott LaRock/KRS One, GURU/DJ Premier, There was DJ Kool Herc and Coke LaRock, the first MC, from the building located at 1520 Sedgewick Ave. in the Bronx , in the Recreation Room on August 11, 1973. It was an entrepreneurial event. General admission was $.25 for the girls and $.50 for the fellas. Who would every believe this first H.I.P. H.O.P. Party change the world and is now known as H.I.P. H.O.P. Culture. Unfortunately, there is no mention of them in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or any Pioneer Award or Lifetime Grammy.
If it had not been for these pioneers, Jay Z couldn't have brought a basketball team back to his neighborhood where he once sold crack, Dr. Dre wouldn't have had signature headphones, P-Diddy wouldn't have a international clothing line, Will Smith couldn't have shown the world he could act without making a rap video or Lil' Wayne wouldn't have made millions off cell phone ringtones. I don't even hear them being acknowledged by any "RAPPER" who's ever won an award. Recently, Kool Herc was in the hospital and didn't have proper medical coverage, which put his finances in a compromise. If every rapper, every Hip Hop artist, every producer, every rap label could have invested $10,000 each in the one who was responsible for their careers, he would not be in any lack.
This was the motivation and the inspiration on why I started The H.I.P. H.O.P. Movement Youth Academy, to show our youth that these pioneers started a international phenomenon but never collected the royalties, the residuals or the respect as entrepreneurs through their GIFT. The Academy will focus primarily on Financial Literacy(which in the early days, cats was doing this for money, but for the love of it, but just imagine if they couldn't have invested in a piece of it), Youth Mentoring(These dudes influenced an entire community, which spread throughout the five boroughs, then to regions and then national and international) Life Skills(knowing how to conduct business and getting the best out of your craft) Anti-Bullying (Kool Herc was stabbed at a party and his MC, Coke LaRock went after the perpetrator..and in our lifetime, we've had East Coast-West Coast beef which turn Biggie/Tupac into martyrs) and Cultural Experiences (This Artform is recognized by Congress, there are museums in Europe on the culture of Hip Hop)..
Hip Hop is not "rap" music, but it actually comes from 4 elements: DJing, MCing, Graffiti and BBoyism. The H.I.P. H.O.P. Movement Youth Academy looks to bring the same spirit, but the 4 "E's" of the Academy are to: Enable, Equip, Expand and Empower our youth into making them into tomorrows Entrepreneurs! Helping Individual Prosper and Honoring Others Potential is H.I.P. H.O.P. Much respect to the Founder Fathers of H.I.P. H.O.P. that for the past 40 years later, has connected all races and created a worldwide movement!! We should be proud for such an achievement. Thank you, Kool Herc and Coke LaRock.
